Happenstance vs 4Degrees

4Degrees is a CRM a private-market firm buys by the seat. Happenstance is people search one person starts free and a firm pools in a group.

The short version

4Degrees, if a private-market firm is choosing its system of record; Happenstance, if what you need is to find who you already know, since it's free and one person can start it. 4Degrees is a relationship-intelligence CRM for the whole deal team: it syncs the firm's email and calendar, scores relationships, runs deal pipelines and enriches records from Crunchbase and PitchBook, priced per user through a sales call. Happenstance is AI people search over seven connected sources, personal and social accounts included, that answers plain-English questions, and a firm pools it in a group. A fund choosing its system of record should shortlist 4Degrees against Affinity; everyone at that fund, and everyone outside one, gets more from Happenstance, and 500,000+ people already use it.

4Degrees details from 4degrees.ai public pages, including its pricing page.

Choose Happenstance if

  • You want to search who you know today, without a sales call
  • The paths you need run through personal LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram or Google Contacts, not only firm email
  • You're a partner, angel, scout or founder, not a procurement process
  • The fund, its angels and its portfolio should share one searchable graph, free
  • You want the answer inside ChatGPT, Claude or your own code

Consider 4Degrees only if

  • The firm is choosing its system of record and needs a deal pipeline in the same tool
  • You want every partner's firm email and calendar captured automatically, with relationship scores on the records
  • Crunchbase and PitchBook data should land on the company record, not in a separate tab
  • A per-user monthly contract fits the firm better than an annual seat

Happenstance and 4Degrees on paper

Happenstance publishes its price, its user count and its attestation; 4Degrees asks you to get in touch. The workflow rows are where a deal CRM earns its seat price.

4Degrees sees the firm's email, Happenstance sees your own accounts

4Degrees builds its graph from what the firm can see: the email and calendar of every seat it licenses, scored for strength and recency, then augmented with Crunchbase and PitchBook. That's the right design for a CRM. The firm owns the record, the record outlives the partner, and the score tells a new associate which people in the system the firm has a live relationship with.

It also means the graph stops at the firm's domain. A partner's 3,000 LinkedIn connections, the founders she follows on Twitter, the angel group in her personal Gmail, the scout who texts her deals, none of it's in 4Degrees unless it passed through a firm inbox.

Happenstance starts from the other end. Each person connects the accounts they choose, up to seven sources, and the graph is the union of what those accounts recorded: who they emailed, met with, follow or saved. A fund puts its partners, angels and portfolio founders in one group and the whole thing becomes searchable, with each person's connections visible only to them, their friends and the groups they joined. No seat is bought and no admin sets it up.

What each one does with the graph

The second difference is what you do with the graph. In 4Degrees the relationship score sits on a record inside a pipeline; you open the company, see who at the firm knows it and how well, and log what happens next. It's a system of record, and its value grows with the discipline of the team that keeps it.

Happenstance is a question box. "Which of my connections are founders who used to work at Stripe?" "Who in our group can introduce me to a partner at Benchmark?" "Who do I know in Austin who has raised a seed round since January?" The answer is a ranked list of people with the path to each one, and where nobody in the graph fits, web search extends the answer beyond it. Nothing has to be logged for the next question to work.

Which of my connections are founders who used to work at Stripe?

An example of the answer this question returns. The people and the counts are illustrative; what a search returns depends on the accounts each person has connected. One question over every connected account, with the path to each person marked as directly known or through a colleague, where a firm CRM would show only the subset that passed through a firm inbox.

Where 4Degrees is the better buy

The firm needs a pipeline. Deal stages, documents, notes and reminders on each company, and reporting across the fund are CRM work.

Capture has to be automatic and firm-wide. If the mandate is that every partner's email and calendar lands in the system without anyone connecting anything, that's what a firm-licensed CRM does. Happenstance is opt-in per person, which is its privacy model; a firm-licensed CRM captures every seat without asking anyone.

Enrichment belongs on the record. Crunchbase and PitchBook fields on the company page, next to the pipeline stage, are useful in a way a search result isn't when the job is portfolio monitoring rather than finding a person.

In each of these cases the right comparison is 4Degrees against Affinity.

Running 4Degrees and Happenstance together

The two run together, because one of them is free. The CRM holds the pipeline, the firm-wide capture and the company records. Happenstance holds the question of who knows whom across every account each person chose to connect, including the personal and social ones the CRM never syncs. Nothing moves between them automatically; you search Happenstance, take the intro, and log the outcome in the CRM as you would after a phone call.

Adding Happenstance costs nothing and touches no CRM data. The pipeline, the notes and the reminders stay in 4Degrees; what changes is where the sourcing question gets asked first.

A fund can also invite the people a CRM has no seat for: scouts, venture partners, portfolio founders, LPs who like to help. In a group they're searchable by the fund and the fund by them, on the free plan, and the largest groups on Happenstance make 380,000+ people searchable. Start with your own accounts and add the group after.

The real power lives in the actual network of your network. That's why Happenstance is so good.

What Happenstance can see

Email is read as headers only. Message content and attachments never reach our servers. Yes. Your connections are searchable only by you, the friends you accept, and the groups you join, and sharing is always mutual. Your public profile shows a constellation of named people you know by default, which you can turn off anytime. We never share, sell, or use your data to train AI models. Happenstance is SOC 2 certified and DTI Trust Level 2; the full list of what is stored and for how long is on the security page.

Frequently asked questions

The difference

What's the difference between Happenstance and 4Degrees?

The buyer and the graph. 4Degrees is a CRM sold to private-market firms: it captures the firm's email and calendar, scores relationships, tracks deals in a pipeline and enriches records from Crunchbase and PitchBook. Happenstance is people search for a person or a group: seven connected sources including LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram, plain-English questions, and warm paths ranked by relationship strength, free.

Is 4Degrees a CRM or a relationship intelligence tool?

Both, by its own description: the AI-powered CRM for private-market deals and the relationships that drive them. The relationship intelligence is the layer it builds on top of the CRM from the firm's synced email and calendar.

Does Happenstance replace a deal CRM like 4Degrees?

Happenstance answers the question a CRM can't, who you and your group know and how well, and it runs beside any CRM because the free plan costs nothing. The deal pipeline, per-person notes, reminders and mail merge are the CRM's job, and a firm that needs them keeps 4Degrees or Affinity.

Pricing

How much does 4Degrees cost?

4Degrees doesn't publish prices. Its pricing page says it charges per user per month and that the exact figure depends on your organization and team, so you have to get in touch.

Is Happenstance cheaper than 4Degrees?

Happenstance is free, with Pro at $30 per month or $24 per month billed yearly. 4Degrees is quoted per user per month through sales and publishes no figure.

Is Happenstance free?

Yes. The free plan is the whole product, Sidedoor included, with unlimited connected accounts, friends and groups. The limits are on chat usage and on web searches beyond your network, and Pro raises them. No credit card.

Funds and deal teams

Should a VC fund choose 4Degrees or Happenstance?

For the fund's system of record, compare 4Degrees with Affinity; both capture firm email and calendar, score relationships and run pipelines. For searching who the partners, the angels and the portfolio know, including the personal and social accounts a firm CRM never syncs, use Happenstance, which runs beside the CRM at no cost.

Can a fund pool its partners' networks in Happenstance?

Yes. A group pools every member's connected accounts into one graph any member can search, and each person's connections stay searchable only by them, their friends and their groups. Groups are free and unlimited, and the largest make 380,000+ people searchable. A fund can add its portfolio founders and scouts to the same group without buying seats.

Can I use 4Degrees and Happenstance together?

Yes. 4Degrees holds the pipeline and the firm-wide activity capture; Happenstance answers who-knows-whom across every account each person connects. Nothing syncs between them; you search Happenstance and log the outcome in the CRM.

Use cases

Which is better for sourcing deals through warm intros?

4Degrees finds paths through the firm's captured email and calendar. Happenstance finds paths through that plus each person's LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Google Contacts and calendar, and ranks them by relationship strength. For a partner who wants an intro to a founder, the second graph is larger and the answer arrives from a plain-English question.

Which is better for an individual investor or founder?

Happenstance. 4Degrees is sold to firms, per user, through sales, and its graph is the firm's. An angel, a solo GP, a scout or a founder raising a round can sign up for Happenstance, connect their own accounts and search, free.

Developers and AI assistants

Does 4Degrees have an API or MCP server?

Not published; 4Degrees does appear in OpenAI's app directory. Happenstance ships a public API, an MCP server, a ChatGPT app, Claude and Claude Code integrations and a CLI, on every plan; API and MCP calls use credits.

Can I search my network from ChatGPT or Claude with Happenstance?

Yes. Add the Happenstance app in ChatGPT or connect the MCP server in Claude, and ask the same questions you'd ask in Happenstance, such as who in your group knows a partner at a given fund. The answers come from your connected accounts and the groups you belong to.
