CRM for venture capital

The fund's CRM holds the pipeline and the relationship history. Happenstance is the search layer under it, answering the question that comes first: who do we know at this company, and who can get us in.

The short version

A CRM for venture capital is the fund's system of record: the deal pipeline, relationship history across every partner's inbox and calendar, and enrichment on companies. Affinity, 4Degrees and DealCloud are built for that job. Happenstance is the search layer under it: an individual partner's or a founder's plain-English search over their own connected accounts (Gmail, Outlook, Google Calendar, Google Contacts, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram), free. A fund can pool the partnership's networks in a free group and ask "who do we know at this company?" without buying a seat for anyone.

The system of record, and the search layer under it

The system of record is the CRM. Affinity and 4Degrees capture every partner's email and calendar, score each relationship, attach the result to a pipeline, and enrich companies from PitchBook and Crunchbase; DealCloud sits at the enterprise end of the same category. All three are administered by the fund, priced per seat, and bought through a sales conversation rather than a signup form. Affinity's own venture capital page says nearly 70% of VC deals trace back to existing networks, which is the argument for the whole category.

The search layer under it is Happenstance. One person connects their accounts and asks in plain English: “founders in my network who started a company this year”, “who do I know at Anduril?”, “which of my connections have worked with this CEO?” Results rank by how well you know each person and show the path in. The pipeline, the deal objects and the company enrichment stay in the system of record.

A fund that runs Affinity loses nothing by adding Happenstance. A partner who isn't ready to buy seats for the whole firm, or a solo GP, gets the network half for free.

Search the whole firm's network at once

Groups pool their members' networks. Each partner connects their own accounts; the group can then be searched as one network, and the answer to “who do we know at this company?” comes back with which partner holds the relationship and where it came from. Sharing is mutual, membership is by invitation, and a group can include scouts, venture partners and portfolio founders as well as the partnership.

Groups are free and unlimited. The largest groups on Happenstance make 380,000+ people searchable. 500,000+ people use the product. Sourcing, references and portfolio support are at Happenstance for investors.

An example of the answer this question returns. The people and the counts are illustrative; what a search returns depends on the accounts each person has connected.A group search: each row names the partner who knows the person and how well, so the ask goes to the right chair.
  • Sourcing off-market

Search your own connections for people who changed what they're doing, rather than waiting for the deck to arrive. Enriched profiles carry current roles, so the query works even when you knew the person at a previous job.

Founders in my network who started a company this year

  • References in one query

Before a term sheet, find everyone in the partnership's pooled network who has worked with the founder. Ranking favors the people you know best, which is who will pick up the phone.

Who do we know who has worked with this founder?

  • Portfolio asks

A portfolio company needs a head of sales or a customer introduction. The same search runs over the whole group, and the answer says which partner to route the ask through.

Who do we know who runs sales at a public software company?

The founder's side of the same search

The search runs from the other chair too. A founder raising asks “which of my connections have raised from Accel?” and gets the founders who can make the introduction, ranked by strength of relationship, with a direct path or the friend who can open the door, and the rest of that flow is at Happenstance for fundraising and CRM for founders.

Picking the system of record

A fund that needs a system of record picks one of these four, and whichever it picks, Happenstance sits under it for free.

Consider Affinity only if

  • The partnership wants one shared pipeline with relationship scoring across every partner's email and calendar, plus enrichment from PitchBook and Crunchbase
  • $2,000 (Essential), $2,300 (Scale) or $2,700 (Advanced) per user per year. No free tier, no self-serve

Consider 4Degrees only if

  • You want a private-markets CRM with relationship scoring and are buying for the whole team
  • Pricing not published; per-user per-month, quoted after a call

Consider DealCloud only if

  • You want the enterprise end of the category and are buying for the whole firm
  • Pricing not published

Consider Attio only if

  • You want a general-purpose CRM with pipelines and a free tier to start on, rather than a sales call
  • Free for up to 3 seats; Plus $35 per user billed annually or $44 monthly; Pro $79 or $99

What Happenstance can see

Email is read as headers only. Message content and attachments never reach our servers. Yes. Your connections are searchable only by you, the friends you accept, and the groups you join, and sharing is always mutual. Your public profile shows a constellation of named people you know by default, which you can turn off anytime. We never share, sell, or use your data to train AI models. Happenstance is SOC 2 certified and DTI Trust Level 2; the full list of what is stored and for how long is on the security page.

Frequently asked questions

What's a venture capital CRM?

The fund's system of record for deals and relationships. It captures every partner's email and calendar activity, scores the strength of each relationship, tracks companies through a pipeline, and enriches them from databases such as PitchBook and Crunchbase. Affinity, 4Degrees and DealCloud are the established products.

Is Happenstance a CRM for venture capital?

It's the search layer under one. Connect your accounts and ask who you know at a company, who can introduce you to a founder, or which founders in your network started something this year. The pipeline, the deal objects and the company enrichment live in the fund's CRM; a fund runs Happenstance beside it, or on its own before it's ready to buy seats.

How much does a VC CRM cost?

Affinity publishes $2,000 (Essential), $2,300 (Scale) and $2,700 (Advanced) per user per year, with no free tier and no self-serve. 4Degrees and DealCloud don't publish prices. Attio, a general CRM some smaller funds use, is free for up to three seats and $35 per user a month billed annually after that, and Happenstance is free.

Can our whole partnership search one network?

Yes. Create a group, invite the partners, and each one connects their own accounts. The group is then searchable as one network, and the answer to "who do we know at this company?" shows which partner holds the relationship. Groups are free and unlimited, membership is by invitation, and sharing is mutual. The largest groups on Happenstance make 380,000+ people searchable.

How is Happenstance different from Affinity?

Affinity is the firm's CRM: pipeline, relationship scores across the whole firm's email and calendar, enrichment, and an agent platform, at $2,000 to $2,700 per user per year. Happenstance is an individual's search over seven connected accounts, including LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram, which Affinity does not list among its sources, and it's free. Affinity tracks the deal and Happenstance finds the person; the head-to-head is at /compare/happenstance-vs-affinity.

Can founders use it to find investors?

Yes, and it's the same search from the other chair. A founder asks "which of my connections have raised from Accel?" and gets ranked founders with the path to each one. The fundraising page walks through it.

Does it work from Claude or ChatGPT?

Yes. Happenstance ships an MCP server, a ChatGPT app, Claude and Claude Code integrations, a public API and a CLI, on every plan; API and MCP calls use credits. Affinity's MCP server is included from its Scale tier at $2,300 per user per year.
