Security at Happenstance

Your network is yours. We keep it that way.

Happenstance works by understanding who you know. This page explains what we collect, who can search it, and what happens when you disconnect.

Data practices

Privacy and security come first.

These practices apply to everything you connect. The full details are in our privacy policy.

Encrypted in transit and at rest

Happenstance encrypts your data while it moves between systems and while it is stored.

Never used to train AI

We don't sell your network data or use it to train AI models.

Private by default

Your connections aren't public. Your connections are only searchable to you, the Happenstance friends you accept, and the Happenstance groups you join.

Disconnect anytime

Disconnecting stops future sync and deletes the data imported from that account, including stored credentials and network connections. You can reconnect at any time.

Connectors

We collect only what's necessary.

Happenstance needs to understand who you know. It doesn't need the contents of your messages, and each connector is built around that difference.

Network exports

Inspect first, upload second

Supported network exports are processed locally in your browser. You select what to share and can preview exactly what will be uploaded.

Email & DMs

No message bodies or attachments

We don't request or receive message bodies or attachments from Gmail, Outlook, or your LinkedIn and Instagram DMs. We only use details like who sent a message and when to understand who you know.

Connected accounts

Access you grant and can revoke

Supported accounts connect through OAuth, so we never see your password and you can revoke access at any time. We request the access each connector needs, read-only where available.

Search results

Results show people, not messages

Search helps someone find the right person. It never exposes the content or recency of your private communications.

Independent assurance

Independent reviews back our security practices.

External reviews provide independent evidence for our security controls and our handling of user-directed data transfers.
