How to get into Y Combinator
Apply through the form, and add a recommendation from a founder YC has already funded. The application is the route; the recommendation is the one thing you can bring to it from outside.

The short version
Apply to Y Combinator through its form, and add a recommendation from a founder it's already funded. YC says it considers every application equally, and the one thing you can attach beyond the application itself is a word from somebody the firm has backed, which is why the useful question before you apply is who you know who's been through a batch. An old teammate, a client or an acquaintance of an acquaintance may well have, and the evidence of that lives in your inbox and calendar rather than in memory. Happenstance runs that search over the accounts you've already connected, from a single question.
Apply through the form, and add a recommendation
Y Combinator funds companies at the very start, often before there's a product, and takes them through a batch toward a first real round. It takes open applications through its own form on ycombinator.com/apply, invests a standard amount in every company it accepts and says it considers all applications equally. So there's no partner to write to and no inbox to find; the form is the door, and the application is what a partner reads.
The one thing you can add from outside is a recommendation, which an alum can file alongside your submission. YC weighs its own graduates the way any investor weighs the entrepreneurs it has bet on before, so the useful homework is working out which former batch members sit inside your circle, who else carries a tie to the program, and which acquaintance could put you in touch. Several of them are probably a hop or two away, and the task is discovering which.
Finding your path to Y Combinator
Founders YC has funded. An old teammate who later went through a batch, an operator you sat beside at a dinner, or a client whose startup came out of the program. Their endorsement lands inside the file a partner reviews, where no cover note of yours can reach.
People at or around the firm. Group partners and staff count, as do former employees, the operators YC keeps close, and any acquaintance of yours who happens to know one of them.
Happenstance. Happenstance searches every account you connect, Gmail, Outlook, Google Calendar, Google Contacts, LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram, along with the networks of the friends you've added, and answers in plain English. Ask who you know who went through Y Combinator, or who you know at the firm, and you'll get the people, how well you know each one, which account the tie came from and, for anyone a friend knows, the friend who can introduce you. Happenstance is free. The free plan is the whole product, with usage limits on chat and web searches beyond your network. Pro raises the limits: unlimited web searches and results, higher chat limits, and CSV export. The full fundraising version, first search through to the term sheet, is on Happenstance for fundraising.
The ask
Write to the alum before you touch the recommendation field in the application. Ask for one recommendation and tell them which batch you're applying to, then include the paragraph you'd like them to draw on, so that saying yes takes them a couple of minutes.
Subject: Recommendation for [company]'s YC application
What Happenstance can see
Email is read as headers only. Message content and attachments never reach our servers. Yes. Your connections are searchable only by you, the friends you accept, and the groups you join, and sharing is always mutual. Your public profile shows a constellation of named people you know by default, which you can turn off anytime. We never share, sell, or use your data to train AI models. Happenstance is SOC 2 certified and DTI Trust Level 2; the full list of what is stored and for how long is on the security page.
Frequently asked questions
Should I apply to YC directly or get an introduction?
Apply directly; the form is the route, and there's no separate door for people with a connection. What an introduction becomes at YC is a recommendation, filed inside the application by a founder the firm has funded, so the sensible plan is to fill in the form and ask an alum you know to add their word to it.
What if I don't know anyone connected to Y Combinator?
Chances are you know someone who does. Graduates of the program sit one hop away in most entrepreneurs' circles, and so do former YC staff and the acquaintances of either. Happenstance searches your own accounts together with your friends' networks, so asking "who do I know who went through Y Combinator" returns those people and the mutual who can introduce you.
What should the first email to a Y Combinator partner contain?
At YC the first thing a partner reads is your application, so put the effort there. What you send an alum is different: one paragraph they could paste into a recommendation without editing, covering what the company does in a sentence, the number that shows it's working, where you are with the round and why you're applying now. Keep it under a hundred and fifty words and attach nothing.
How does Happenstance help me reach Y Combinator?
Connect the accounts you already use, Gmail, Outlook, Google Calendar, Google Contacts, LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram, then ask who you know who went through Y Combinator, or who you know at the firm. Each result shows how well you know that person and which account the tie came from, and for anyone a friend knows, the friend who can introduce you. Happenstance is free, and Pro raises the limits.
