How to reach out to investors on LinkedIn
LinkedIn is good at two things here: telling you which partner to write to, and carrying a very short note. Everything else about your raise happens somewhere else.

The short version
Reach out through the strongest person you and the investor both know, and use LinkedIn for what it does well: finding the right partner and carrying a short note. Keep the connection request under 200 characters, name the mutual connection first, and save the pitch for the message after they accept. Pay for InMail only when there's no mutual.
Why the note beats the InMail
An investor on LinkedIn is working through a queue. Partners at active funds get connection requests every day, most opening with three paragraphs about a company they have never heard of. Being short and carrying a name they know is what moves you out of it.
LinkedIn has published data on the first one. Its own analysis of InMail found that the shortest messages, under 400 characters, get a response rate 22% above the average for all InMails, while the longest run 11% below it (LinkedIn Talent Blog, 2022). The connection note is stricter still: 200 characters on a free account, 300 on Premium. That is two sentences, which is the right length anyway.
The second thing is the person you both know. LinkedIn puts mutual connections on every profile because it is the strongest signal the platform holds about whether two strangers should talk. Naming one changes the decision: the investor is no longer judging a stranger, but deciding whether to be rude to somebody they know.
LinkedIn only knows LinkedIn ties, though. The person best placed to vouch for you may be someone you've emailed for six years and never connected with there, or a founder whose board meeting you sat in on, or someone in a group chat you've been in since 2019. None of that shows up in the mutual connections list, which is why finding the person worth naming starts off LinkedIn.
Doing this with Happenstance
The step people skip is the second one, because doing it properly means checking every partner at every firm on your list against everyone you know. That comparison is the part Happenstance does for you. Connect Gmail, Outlook, Google Calendar, Google Contacts, LinkedIn, Twitter or Instagram, and ask in plain English: “Who do I know at Accel?” You get people back, ranked, each with how you are connected and how well you know them. Because it reads your email headers and your calendar, it finds the connections LinkedIn can't see: the person you know from email alone, the founder you sat on a panel with, the friend of a friend inside a group you joined.
Happenstance is free. The free plan is the whole product, with usage limits on chat and web searches beyond your network. Pro raises the limits: unlimited web searches and results, higher chat limits, and CSV export. More on the fundraising workflow is on Happenstance for fundraising.
The two messages, written out
The connection note is capped at 200 characters, so every word has to earn its place. The message after it is the one that gets you the meeting.
1. The connection note
2. The first message after they accept
If a mutual connection agreed to introduce you instead, don't send either of these. Send them a forwardable email and let them do it in one click.
What Happenstance can see
Email is read as headers only. Message content and attachments never reach our servers. Yes. Your connections are searchable only by you, the friends you accept, and the groups you join, and sharing is always mutual. Your public profile shows a constellation of named people you know by default, which you can turn off anytime. We never share, sell, or use your data to train AI models. Happenstance is SOC 2 certified and DTI Trust Level 2; the full list of what is stored and for how long is on the security page.
Frequently asked questions
Should I connect with investors on LinkedIn?
Yes, if you have something specific to say and a reason they should recognize you. A connection request with a two-sentence note naming a person you both know is a normal thing to receive and cheap to accept. A request with no note, sent to a partner who doesn't invest at your stage, is the one that gets ignored.
How long should a LinkedIn connection note be?
LinkedIn caps it at 200 characters on a free account and 300 on Premium, which is two sentences. Use the first for the mutual connection or the reason you picked this partner, and the second for the ask. Shorter messages get answered more often than long ones, so the cap is doing you a favor.
How do you message a VC on LinkedIn?
After they accept, send one message with the round in the first line, one number that shows the business is working, and a request for twenty minutes. Don't attach the deck in that message. Investors read LinkedIn on a phone between meetings, so anything that needs a download waits, and waiting means forgotten.
Is LinkedIn InMail worth it for fundraising?
Only when there's no other route. InMail is a paid feature, and a paid message with no mutual connection is still a cold message with a badge on it. Spend it on the partner you can't reach any other way, keep the subject to three words, and keep the body under 400 characters.
What do I do if the investor does not accept my request?
Leave it. A pending request costs you nothing and canceling it doesn't help. Spend the effort on finding someone who can introduce you instead, because an introduction from a founder they backed will beat any note you can write.
Can I send my pitch deck on LinkedIn?
Not in the first message. Send it when they ask for it, or when you've booked the call and want them to read something first. A deck attached to an opening message reads as a mail merge, and it removes the reason for them to reply.
