How to reach out to angel investors

An angel is one person spending their own money. The email is short, it opens on the amount, and it's written so the angel can forward it to the next angel.

The short version

Angel investors answer their own email, so write one short email to one person: the amount and the round in the first line, who suggested you write in the second, then one number with a time frame, what is committed and the minimum check. An angel's check is far smaller than the deal it sits in, so name a minimum that is an easy yes. Check who you already know before writing cold.

An angel check, in the data

The University of New Hampshire's Center for Venture Research measures the US angel market every year. In its report on 2023, the average angel deal was $339,390 for 9.7% of the company, and 41% of the deals were at the seed and start-up stage (Jeffrey Sohl, The Angel Market in 2023, June 20, 2024). The whole market was $18.6 billion across 54,735 companies, down 16.4% on 2022, while the number of active angels rose 14.8% to 422,350.

A $339,390 deal is not one person's check. Angels invest as groups behind a lead, and the same report counts 422,350 active angels behind $18.6 billion in the year, so the person you're writing to is deciding on their own money, and a first check is far smaller than the deal. The report's yield rate, the share of companies that pitched and got funded, was 24.2%.

The email, and why it opens on the amount

An angel who is not going to write a check should find that out in the first line. So the first line names the amount and the round, the second names who suggested you write or which of their investments led you here, and the rest fits on one phone screen: what the company does in a sentence a stranger understands, one number with a time frame on it, what's already committed, and the minimum check.

Subject: [Company]: [one-line what you do], raising [amount]

[Name], asking you for a [amount] check in the [round] we close on [date]. The short case: [Why you: who suggested I write, or which of your investments led me here.] We're [company]. [What you do, in one sentence someone outside your industry understands.] [The one number, with a time frame: revenue, users, retention, contracts signed. If there's no number yet, the strongest piece of evidence you have, such as who is using it and what they replaced.] Raising [amount] on [instrument], [amount] already committed from [names or types of investors]. Minimum check is [amount]. You would be useful beyond the money on [the specific thing: their market, their buyer, the problem they lived through]. Are you open to a call this week? [Deck attached, or: happy to send the deck.] [Your name] [Phone]

Angels forward emails to other angels, usually without adding a note, so the email has to survive being read by somebody who wasn't on the original thread. That is the same rule behind a good warm introduction email. When nobody you know can reach the angel at all, how to get in touch with investors compares the channels that are left.

The angels already one step away

Before writing cold, check who you can already reach. Happenstance searches the accounts you connect, Gmail, Outlook, Google Calendar, Google Contacts, LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram, as one network. Ask “Who in my network has angel invested in a seed round in the last two years?”, or type an angel's name to see who you both know, and each result carries the path and the account it came from. A founder group pools its members' networks, so the map is larger than your own. Happenstance is free. The free plan is the whole product, with usage limits on chat and web searches beyond your network. Pro raises the limits: unlimited web searches and results, higher chat limits, and CSV export.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between an angel and a VC?

An angel invests their own money and answers to nobody, so the decision can be one person, one call. A VC invests other people's money through a partnership, which means partner meetings, memos and a process. So angel checks are smaller and angel answers come faster.

How much should I ask an angel to invest?

Name a minimum rather than a target, and keep it low enough to be an easy yes. The University of New Hampshire's 2023 report puts the average angel deal at $339,390 with angels investing as a group behind a lead, so one person's check is far smaller than the deal, and asking one angel for six figures in a first email gets silence. Say the minimum and what you have already raised, then let them size up on the call.

Do angel investors reply to cold emails?

More often than funds do, because there's no associate filtering the inbox and many angels are founders who remember cold emailing people. It still helps enormously to have a name they know in the first line. If nobody you know can reach them, write the shortest, most specific email you can and accept the odds.

What's an angel syndicate?

A syndicate is one angel leading a deal and pulling other investors in behind them on a single line of the cap table. You pitch the lead, and if they commit they bring the rest. It is one relationship to manage instead of twenty, and the trade is a carry on the upside and less direct contact with the people behind the money.

How many angels should I email?

Enough to fill the round twice over, which for a first raise usually means a list of thirty to fifty and real conversations with ten to fifteen. Work the list in waves so you can fix the pitch between them. A hundred identical emails sent in one afternoon will do worse than twenty written one at a time.
