Contact management means keeping one accurate list of the people you know across every place they live: email, calendar, social accounts and Google Contacts. Most apps do it by syncing and deduplicating address books. Why syncing the address book is the wrong job
The address book apps in this category do one thing well: they pull your phone, Gmail, iCloud and Outlook address books together, remove the duplicates, and push the clean list back to every device.
The trouble is that a clean address book still answers one question, which is “what is this person's number?” It can't tell you who among 4,000 entries works in hardware, who you know best, or who could introduce you to someone at Stripe, because the name and the number were never the hard part.
Happenstance starts from the other end. It's reading the accounts as evidence of relationships rather than as lists to reconcile: who wrote to whom and how often, who was in which meeting, who follows whom. Then it lets you ask the questions the address book couldn't.
