Account mapping

Who at the target account does your team already know, and who can make the introduction? Happenstance answers it from your team's connected accounts, ranked by how well each person is known.

The short version

Account mapping is working out who at the target account you and your team already know, how well, and who can make the introduction. Happenstance maps an account by searching the pooled network of everyone on your team, across seven connected sources, ranking each person at the company by relationship strength and showing the path to them. It's free.

How Happenstance maps an account

Everyone connects their own accounts. Each teammate links the accounts they already use: Gmail, Outlook, Google Calendar, Google Contacts, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram. Happenstance reads email as headers only, never content, and turns years of who-emailed-whom and who-met-whom into one profile per person, with a relationship strength score for each.

The team pools into one network. Friends and groups pool networks, so a search runs across every teammate's connections at once. A five-person sales team searches a graph five people wide. The largest groups on Happenstance pool 380,000+ people, and groups are free and unlimited.

Ask about the account. “Who on my team knows anyone at Datadog?” returns the people at Datadog your team has emailed, met, or connected with, each with their current title, the teammate who knows them, and the evidence behind the score. A colleague's weekly correspondent ranks above the name that only sits in someone's LinkedIn list.

  • One pooled network

Your connections, your teammates' connections, and the groups you join, searched together. Sharing is mutual and each person controls what they pool.

  • Ranked by relationship strength

Not degrees of connection. Frequency and recency of email and meetings decide the order, so the warm relationship surfaces above the dormant one.

  • The path in

Every result shows how you reach the person: directly, through a teammate, or through a group. You know who to ask before you ask.

Four things people mean by account mapping

Relationship account mapping is who on your side knows whom at the account, and how well. It's the first question in any sale that starts warm and any raise that starts with an introduction.

Partner account mapping compares your CRM against a partner's CRM to find shared customers and shared prospects. Crossbeam owns this meaning and it's a different product: it needs a partner on the other side, a CRM on each side, and match lists built from both. If your question is “which of our partners already sell into this account?”, that's where to go.

Org-chart account mapping draws the buying committee inside one account: who reports to whom, who signs, who blocks. DemandFarm, Prolifiq and Altify sell this to enterprise sales teams. Happenstance shows each known person's current title; the chart of who reports to whom is what those tools draw.

Account mapping in accounting maps a chart of accounts between ledgers, and has nothing to do with the other three.

Sales and fundraising are the same search

A seller opening an account and a founder opening a fund ask the same thing with a different noun. “Who on my team knows anyone at Datadog?” and “Which of my connections have raised from Accel?” run through the same pooled network and come back the same way: people, ranked, with the path.

For a sales team, the pool is the team plus the group of customers, advisors and ex-colleagues each rep brings. For a founder, the pool is co-founders, angels, existing investors and other founders in the same cohort. 500,000+people use Happenstance, and it's free. See Happenstance for sales and Happenstance for fundraising for each side of the search.

When another kind of account mapping is the right tool

Consider Crossbeam only if

  • Your question is which partners already sell into the account, and you have partners willing to share CRM data
  • Free up to 3 seats; Connector is $4,800 a year; Supernode and Enterprise are custom

Consider DemandFarm only if

  • You run enterprise deals and need the buying committee drawn as a chart, with reporting lines and roles
  • Pricing not published; demo-led

Consider Sales Navigator TeamLink only if

  • LinkedIn connections are the only relationships your team has, and degrees of connection are enough
  • TeamLink is on Advanced at $159.99 per seat per month; it cannot see who a teammate emails or meets

If the question is “who do we know there?”, connect your accounts, add your team, and ask. The head-to-head with Sales Navigator is at Happenstance vs LinkedIn Sales Navigator.

Crossbeam and Sales Navigator details from crossbeam.com and linkedin.com pricing pages. DemandFarm from demandfarm.com, which publishes no prices.

What Happenstance reads, and who can see it

Email is read as headers only. Message content and attachments never reach our servers. Yes. Your connections are searchable only by you, the friends you accept, and the groups you join, and sharing is always mutual. Your public profile shows a constellation of named people you know by default, which you can turn off anytime. We never share, sell, or use your data to train AI models. Happenstance is SOC 2 certified and DTI Trust Level 2; the full list of what is stored and for how long is on the security page.

Frequently asked questions

What's account mapping in sales?

Working out who at a target company you can reach before you open the account: who on your side knows someone there, how well, and who that person knows inside. In Happenstance it's a search. "Who on my team knows anyone at Datadog?" returns the people at Datadog your team has emailed, met, or connected with, ranked by relationship strength, with the teammate who knows each one.

Is account mapping the same as partner account mapping?

No. Partner account mapping compares your CRM against a partner's CRM to find shared customers and prospects, and Crossbeam is the product for it: free up to three seats, Connector $4,800 a year. Relationship account mapping, which is what Happenstance does, is your own team's relationships at a company, and it needs no partner and no CRM.

How does Happenstance know who my team knows at a company?

Each teammate connects their own accounts: Gmail, Outlook, Google Calendar, Google Contacts, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram. Friends and groups pool those networks, so a search runs across everyone's connections at once. Relationship strength comes from evidence such as how often and how recently two people email and meet, read from headers only.

Can I map an account without a CRM?

Yes. Happenstance works from connected accounts, with no CRM and no import step. If your team runs Salesforce or HubSpot, it sits beside them and answers the question that comes before the pipeline, and the public API and MCP server pull paths into your own tools.

Does it map the org chart at the account?

Every result carries the person's current title and company, so you can tell whether the person you know is the buyer, a user, or someone who left last year. The chart itself, with reporting lines and roles, is what DemandFarm and its peers draw; DemandFarm publishes no prices.

Does account mapping work for fundraising?

Yes. The account is a fund and the question is the same: "Which of my connections have raised from Accel?" Founders pool with their investors, advisors, and other founders through friends and groups, then search the pooled network for a path into each firm on their list.

Is it free for a whole team?

Yes. Happenstance is free, and the free plan is the whole product with usage limits on chat and on web searches beyond your network. Groups are free and unlimited, so a sales team or a founder plus their investors can pool at no cost. Pro is $30 a month, or $24 billed yearly, and it raises the limits.
