Happenstance vs Juicebox

Two products that take the same plain-English question about people and read completely different databases to answer it. One is an index of strangers. One is the network your team brought to work.

The short version

Juicebox, if you're a recruiter sourcing candidates nobody on the team has met; Happenstance, if you want candidates who arrive with the colleague who knows them. Juicebox's PeopleGPT search reads an external database of 800M+ profiles, with ATS integrations, outreach sequences and autonomous agents, at $119 per seat a month or $99 billed annually. Happenstance is AI people search over the accounts a person or a team connects: seven sources plus the web, a hiring team pooled in a free group, and it's free.

Juicebox details from juicebox.ai, its pricing page, its PeopleGPT product page and its llms.txt, plus funding coverage from September 2025 and March 2026.

Choose Happenstance if

  • Referrals are a channel you want to work, not a thing that happens by luck
  • You want to know which teammate, advisor or investor can vouch for a candidate
  • The same tool should answer fundraising, sales and partnership questions too
  • Everyone in the company should be able to search the pooled network without a seat
  • You want the answer inside ChatGPT, Claude or your own code

Consider Juicebox only if

  • You're sourcing at volume from a licensed index of people nobody has met
  • Bulk email and phone data with export credits is part of the job
  • The workflow has to land in an ATS, with multi-step outreach sequences attached
  • You want agents that keep sourcing against open roles on their own
  • Recruiting is the only job this software has to do

Juicebox searches strangers, Happenstance searches people you know

Juicebox's pitch is coverage, and the number is the pitch: 800M+ profiles across 30+ data sources, which is more people than any network you'll ever have. For a role where the qualified population is three thousand engineers spread across four continents, coverage is the only thing that matters, and coverage is Juicebox's job.

The trade is that coverage arrives without context. A row in a licensed index tells you where somebody worked and what they list as their skills. It can't tell you that your head of platform managed them, that they answered your cofounder's email, or that the person they would take a call from is sitting in your standup. Those facts sit in the accounts your team already has, since they were never public enough to be indexed.

An example of the answer this question returns. The people and the counts are illustrative; what a search returns depends on the accounts each person has connected. The same question a sourcing tool answers with rows, answered with people plus the colleague who can make the introduction.

The warm pool is larger than it looks, because nobody has added it up. A fifty-person company where each person has a few thousand real connections isn't a rounding error next to an 800M-profile index; it's a few tens of thousands of people, every one of whom is reachable through somebody who works there. Add the advisors, the investors and the last two companies everyone came from, which a Happenstance group can do without buying a seat, and the largest groups on the product make 380,000+ people searchable. Their index is the bigger one; the pool is the part where a message gets answered.

Recruiters don't prefer cold outreach. Referrals were passive because nobody could search them: the knowledge sat in fifty people's heads and inboxes and got surfaced only when someone happened to remember. Pooling a company into a Happenstance group turns that into a query you can run against every open role, and the group costs nothing.

Both take the same question and rank different things

Type "senior infrastructure engineer who has run Kubernetes at scale" into either product and both will parse it properly. PeopleGPT ranks the index by how closely a profile matches the description, which is the right ranking when the goal is to find everyone who fits. Happenstance ranks by fit and by the strength of the route to the person, which is the right ranking when the goal is a reply.

That second ranking changes what you can ask. "Who do we know who left Stripe in the last year?" is a question about your own company's memory. So is "who on our cap table has hired a VP of Sales before" and "which of our advisors knows anyone at Anthropic". Happenstance answers all three from the same box, and answers the sales and fundraising versions of them too, which a recruiting-only platform has no reason to.

It also changes what happens after the list. A sourcing tool hands you names, and then the work is writing a message good enough to earn a reply from somebody who has never heard of you. Happenstance hands you a name and the person standing between you and them, which turns the next step from a cold sequence into one sentence sent to a colleague. An agency whose placements come from its own network is searching that network by memory today. A firm-wide group makes it a query, and nobody is charged per seat or per contact to run it.

The reasons to buy Juicebox anyway

Cold volume. Happenstance reaches past your network with web search, which finds people. When a role needs two hundred candidates and your network holds four, an 800M-profile index with contact credits and verified phone numbers is the answer.

The recruiting machine. 41 ATS integrations, 21 CRM integrations, projects, multi-step outreach sequences and agents that keep sourcing against open roles. If your process lives in Greenhouse or Ashby and you want sourcing wired into it, Juicebox is the one that plugs in.

Recruiting-specific ranking. Juicebox has spent its product on one job: signal detection from GitHub, publications and speaking, candidate summaries, dynamic filters for seniority and skills. That tuning is what a recruiting-only buyer pays for.

Scale of the operation behind it. $30M from Sequoia in September 2025 and $80M led by DST Global at an $850M valuation in March 2026, with 5,000 customers reported at that point. Buying software is partly buying the roadmap.

Running warm first, cold second

What you keep. If your team sources cold at volume, keep Juicebox. It fills pipelines your network can't fill, and the ATS integrations and the sequences live there.

What changes. That's the first step. Before a role goes out to a sequence, run it against the pooled network and see who is already reachable through somebody. Those candidates answer, because the message comes from a person they know rather than from a template. Only then is it worth spending contact credits on people who have never heard of you.

When moving over entirely makes sense. A small company hiring a handful of roles a year, a founder doing their own recruiting, or an agency whose placements come from its own network: all of them are paying per seat for cold coverage they use a few times a quarter. They lose the ATS integrations and the sequences. They gain a searchable company network, and sales and fundraising answers from the same box, at no cost. As a recruiter, thank you. [Happenstance] is better than the Swiss Army knife of OSINT tools we rely on.

What Happenstance reads from your accounts

Email is read as headers only. Message content and attachments never reach our servers. Yes. Your connections are searchable only by you, the friends you accept, and the groups you join, and sharing is always mutual. Your public profile shows a constellation of named people you know by default, which you can turn off anytime. We never share, sell, or use your data to train AI models. Happenstance is SOC 2 certified and DTI Trust Level 2; the full list of what is stored and for how long is on the security page.

Frequently asked questions

The difference

What's the difference between Happenstance and Juicebox?

Which database each one reads. Juicebox's PeopleGPT searches a licensed external index it describes as 800M+ profiles across 30+ data sources, so every candidate starts as a stranger. Happenstance searches the accounts you and your group have connected, so a result is somebody in the room's network, ranked by how well they know them. Both take the question in plain English.

Is Juicebox the same thing as PeopleGPT?

PeopleGPT is the name of the search product inside the Juicebox platform, not the company. Juicebox now positions itself as an AI recruiting platform of search, CRM and agents, and PeopleGPT is the part that turns a description of a candidate into a ranked list from its database.

Does Juicebox know who my team already knows?

No. Juicebox has no first-party graph of your team's relationships: it doesn't read anyone's email headers, calendar or address book, so it can't tell you that a candidate sat two desks from your staff engineer for three years. That knowledge is the thing Happenstance is built on.

Pricing

How much does Juicebox cost?

Starter is $119 per seat per month on monthly billing, or $99 per seat per month billed annually, with unlimited searches and 500 contact and 500 export credits. Growth is $199 per seat per month, or $179 billed annually, for up to five seats. Business is custom and annual only. Juicebox Agents are a $199 per agent per month add-on.

Does Juicebox have a free plan?

It has a free tier: one seat, a limited number of searches with no count published, AI email templates and the ability to set up an agent. It's a sample of the product rather than the product. Happenstance's free plan is the whole product with usage limits on chat and on web searches beyond your network.

Is Happenstance cheaper than Juicebox?

Yes. Happenstance is free, and Pro is $30 a month or $24 a month billed yearly, for one person rather than one seat of a per-seat contract. The cheapest paid Juicebox seat is $99 a month on annual billing, $119 monthly, before contact credits and agents.

Recruiting workflow

Which is better for sourcing candidates?

Juicebox for cold sourcing at volume: an 800M-profile index, 41 ATS integrations, 21 CRM integrations, multi-step outreach sequences and agents that keep sourcing while you sleep. Happenstance for candidates your team can vouch for and reach through somebody, because the message arrives from a person the candidate knows.

Does Happenstance integrate with my ATS?

Happenstance answers who your team knows and how well, and reaches other tools through its API, MCP server and CLI; you move the candidates you want into whichever ATS runs your process. ATS integrations, a candidate pipeline and outreach sequences are Juicebox's.

Can a hiring team pool their networks in Happenstance?

Yes, through a group. Every member's connected accounts become one graph any member can search. Each person's connections stay searchable only by them, their friends and the groups they joined; groups are free and unlimited. Employees, advisors and investors can all sit in the same group without anyone buying a seat.

Can Happenstance find candidates outside my network?

Yes, with web search, and that's a different mechanism from a licensed profile index. Web search reaches people no one in your group knows. Bulk contact data, 800M rows with contact credits attached, is what Juicebox sells.

Beyond recruiting

Can I use Happenstance for things other than hiring?

Yes, and the difference in scope is large. The same search answers fundraising, sales and partnership questions: which investors in our group have backed a marketplace, who can introduce me to a buyer at Datadog, who do I know in Berlin. Juicebox has committed entirely to recruiting and frames everything around the talent market.

Can I use Juicebox and Happenstance together?

Yes, and it's the sensible order. Search Happenstance first for the candidates your team already knows and can approach warm, then run Juicebox for the roles and the seniority levels where the warm pool is empty. Happenstance is free, so the first step adds nothing to the budget.

Data and developers

What does Happenstance read from my accounts?

Email is read as headers only, so message content and attachments never reach our servers. Happenstance is SOC 2 compliant and DTI Trust Level 2, and the full list of what's stored is on the security page. Juicebox publishes no security attestation.

Does Juicebox or Happenstance work with ChatGPT and Claude?

Happenstance does: a public API, an MCP server, a ChatGPT app, Claude and Claude Code integrations and a CLI, on every plan; API and MCP calls use credits. Juicebox publishes ATS and CRM integrations and a browser extension, and no MCP server or assistant app.
