Happenstance vs Introhive

Introhive is bought by a firm and rolled out across its fee-earners. Happenstance is started by a person and pooled by a group, free. Both answer who knows whom, at very different scales.

The short version

Introhive, if a professional services firm is deploying relationship intelligence across its fee-earners; Happenstance, if one person wants the who-knows-whom answer on their own accounts, or a group wants it pooled, free. Introhive captures the firm's email and calendar activity into the CRM, enriches the records and shows which partner knows which client, sold to law, accounting, consulting and built-environment firms with no published price. Happenstance answers the same question in plain English across seven connected sources, personal and social accounts included, for anyone, and 500,000+ people use it.

Introhive details from introhive.com public pages; the cost and implementation figures below are Boomerang's 2026 estimates.

Choose Happenstance if

  • You want the who-knows-whom answer for yourself, not a firm-wide program
  • The relationships that matter live in personal email, calendars, Google Contacts and social accounts
  • A practice group, a boutique or a whole firm should pool networks without seats or a rollout
  • You want a published price and a free plan that's the whole product
  • The answer should be reachable from ChatGPT, Claude or your own code

Consider Introhive only if

  • The mandate is CRM data quality across hundreds or thousands of fee-earners
  • Every client interaction must land in the system of record without anyone connecting anything
  • Marketing and business development report on firm-wide relationship coverage
  • You're a law, accounting, consulting or built-environment firm with a procurement process
  • The firm needs an implementation with rollout, training and adoption support

Introhive and Happenstance, row by row

Introhive publishes what it does and who it sells to, and neither a price nor a company fact sheet. The CRM program rows are where a firm-wide capture program earns its contract.

Introhive cleans the CRM, Happenstance answers a question

The problem Introhive was built for is real and specific. A firm with two thousand fee-earners has two thousand inboxes holding relationships nobody else can see, a CRM full of stale records, and a business development team that can't answer whether the firm already knows the general counsel it's pitching. Automated capture fixes that at the only scale it can be fixed: everywhere at once, without asking a single partner to type anything.

That design decides everything else about the product. Capture has to be firm-wide, so it's bought centrally. It writes into the system of record, so it needs an integration and a data model per firm. It has to survive audit and client confidentiality rules, so it arrives with an implementation. None of that is overhead the vendor invented. It's the shape of the problem.

Happenstance starts from the other question. Not "is the record complete" but "who do I know at this company, and who can introduce me?" That question doesn't need the firm to buy anything. One person connects their own accounts and asks it. A group of people connect theirs and any member can ask across all of them. The answer is a ranked list of people with the path to each one, which is a different output from a clean CRM record.

What a firm-wide capture program can see

An email and calendar capture program sees the firm's email and calendar. That is a large, high-quality signal: an answered thread and a scheduled meeting are the strongest evidence a working relationship exists. It's also bounded by the firm's domain. Everything a partner built before joining, everything that runs through a personal address, the connections on LinkedIn, the people they follow on Twitter, the numbers in their phone, none of it is in the capture stream, because none of it passed through the firm.

Happenstance reads seven sources, and which one holds the path varies more than people expect. A path to a prospective client is often a calendar invite from a previous employer. A path to a candidate is a mutual follow. A path to a co-counsel is a phone entry. Each of those is a relationship the firm never recorded and a partner would remember only if asked the right question.

An example of the answer this question returns. The people and the counts are illustrative; what a search returns depends on the accounts each person has connected. The people, the fact that matched, and the colleague who knows each one; the second half of the question is answered by the strength label on each mutual.

One more thing the capture model rules out: the people who aren't in the firm. Alumni, referral partners, clients-turned-friends and co-counsel at other firms do not have firm inboxes, so a firm program never sees their networks. In Happenstance they join a group, and their networks become searchable by the members, free, with sharing that runs both ways.

Three jobs Introhive does for the firm

It keeps the system of record honest. Capture, deduplication and enrichment into the CRM is Introhive's core claim, advertised at 90% data accuracy, and a data-quality mandate is met with that program.

It covers people who never opt in. Happenstance is opt-in per person, which is its privacy model. Introhive's firm-wide capture includes the partner who would never connect an account voluntarily.

It reports to the firm. Coverage across practice groups, relationship ownership and business development reporting are oversight a firm partnership expects, and Introhive produces them.

If your evaluation is about the system of record rather than the search, the comparison worth running is Introhive against the other relationship intelligence platforms.

Adding Happenstance to a firm that already runs Introhive

What you keep. If the firm runs Introhive, keep it. The capture stream, the CRM hygiene and the reporting are what the contract paid for, and nothing in Happenstance replaces them or touches them. No data moves between the two products.

What Happenstance adds. The sources outside the firm domain, the people outside the firm entirely, and a way to ask the question in words. A partner connects their own accounts; the practice group joins one group; anybody in it can ask who the group knows at a target client and see the path. That runs on the free plan, so it needs no budget line and no procurement cycle.

Where a switch makes sense. Not at a large firm mid-contract. It makes sense for the firms Introhive was never priced for: boutiques, new practices, independent advisors, professionals who left a large firm and took the relationships with them. They lose the CRM program, which they were never going to buy, and they gain the answer, which is the part they wanted. Search your own network free and add the group afterwards.

Client confidentiality and what Happenstance reads

Email is read as headers only. Message content and attachments never reach our servers. Yes. Your connections are searchable only by you, the friends you accept, and the groups you join, and sharing is always mutual. Your public profile shows a constellation of named people you know by default, which you can turn off anytime. We never share, sell, or use your data to train AI models. Happenstance is SOC 2 certified and DTI Trust Level 2; the full list of what is stored and for how long is on the security page.

Frequently asked questions

The difference

What's the difference between Happenstance and Introhive?

Who deploys it and what it produces. Introhive is deployed by a firm across its fee-earners: it captures email and calendar activity into the CRM automatically, cleans and enriches the records, and reports on which partner holds which relationship. Happenstance is search: one person connects their own accounts, or a group pools theirs, and asks in plain English who they know and who can make an introduction. One fills a system of record. The other answers a question.

What does Introhive do?

It calls itself a relationship intelligence platform for professional services and sells to law, accounting, consulting and built-environment firms, naming clients including Freshfields, Grant Thornton, Colliers, Baker Tilly and Osler on its own site. The core mechanic is automated capture of firm-wide email and calendar interactions into the CRM, with contact enrichment it advertises at 90% data accuracy.

Is Happenstance an Introhive alternative?

For the relationship question underneath, yes, and it's the answer for everyone Introhive was never sold to. The CRM program on top, capture into the system of record, record cleaning and adoption reporting, is Introhive's, and a firm whose brief is data quality across a thousand fee-earners buys that program.

Pricing

How much does Introhive cost?

Introhive doesn't publish pricing; it's sold through enterprise sales and quoted per firm. Boomerang's 2026 buyer's guide estimates $50,000 to $150,000 a year for a typical contract.

Is there a free alternative to Introhive?

Happenstance is free, and the free plan is the whole product, Sidedoor included, with unlimited connected accounts, friends and groups, and usage limits on chat and on web searches beyond your network. Pro at $30 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly, raises the limits. It covers the search half of what a firm buys Introhive for; the CRM half stays with Introhive.

What does a firm pay for Happenstance per person?

Nothing, unless someone chooses Pro for themselves. There are no seats, no minimums and no firm-wide contract. Groups, which are how a practice group or a whole firm pools networks, are free and unlimited.

Firms and practice groups

Can a law firm pool its partners' networks in Happenstance?

Yes. A group pools every member's connected accounts into one graph any member can search, and each person's connections remain searchable only by them, their friends and the groups they join. Nobody buys a seat and nothing is installed firm-wide. The largest groups on Happenstance make 380,000+ people searchable.

How long does an Introhive deployment take?

Introhive doesn't publish an implementation timeline; Boomerang's 2026 buyer's guide describes typical implementations of 90 to 180 days. Enterprise capture programs of this kind are scoped as projects with rollout and adoption workstreams, which is part of what the price buys.

Can I use Introhive and Happenstance together?

Yes, and they don't collide. Introhive keeps filling and cleaning the CRM firm-wide. Happenstance answers the who-knows-whom question over the accounts each person chose to connect, including the personal and social ones a firm program never syncs. Nothing passes between them, and the free plan means the second tool adds no line to the budget.

Fit and workflow

Does Happenstance write to Salesforce or a firm CRM?

Happenstance is a search product: it answers who you and your group know, and it reaches other tools through its API, MCP server and CLI. A cleaner CRM is Introhive's job, and a firm that needs one runs it beside the search.

Which is better for a small firm or an independent professional?

Happenstance, and it is not close. Introhive is built and priced for firms with hundreds or thousands of fee-earners and an enterprise procurement process. A five-partner practice, a solo consultant or a boutique advisory can connect accounts and search, free, and pool the whole practice in a group.

Security and data

What does Happenstance read from my email?

Headers only: who wrote to whom and when. Message bodies and attachments never reach our servers. That's enough to rank a relationship by evidence, and it is the reason a professional with client confidentiality obligations can connect an account at all.

Is Happenstance SOC 2 compliant?

Yes. Happenstance is SOC 2 compliant and holds DTI Trust Level 2 accreditation. The full detail of what's stored and for how long is on the security page.

Who can see my connections in Happenstance?

You, the friends you accept, and the groups you join. Sharing is always mutual, and a group member sees that a path exists through you rather than gaining your address book. A partner can join a firm group without exposing anything to the wider internet.
