How to get a referral at Amazon
A referral or a warm introduction from somebody who knows you both is the dependable route into Amazon, and the applicants who get one are the ones who went looking for that somebody.

Why the warm path beats the queue at Amazon
Amazon runs retail, logistics and cloud businesses and hires corporate roles across software engineering, product, program management, finance, and operations. At that scale the volume of applications is far past what recruiters can read one by one, and the applications that do get read carefully tend to be the ones with an employee's name attached. A referral attaches that name for you; a warm introduction does the same thing one step earlier.
The person doesn't have to be close to you. What matters is that they can explain, truthfully, how they know you or how they know whoever is vouching for you.
