Summary

I am Head of Emerging Technologies at Nokia, focused on identifying, acquiring, and developing emerging technologies that create the next generation of products and markets. Across my career I have learned that major technology shifts rarely come from a single breakthrough. They emerge when several capabilities mature at the same time and begin reinforcing each other. Advances in compute, sensing, and data combine to unlock new possibilities. My work focuses on identifying those moments early and translating them into technology roadmaps, product strategy, and capital allocation decisions that position organizations for the next generation of platforms. I began my career at Sikorsky working in acoustics, modeling vibration and system interactions across advanced aircraft platforms. That work focused on how tightly coupled systems behave under real-world constraints and how those interactions shape system performance. It formed the foundation for how I approach technology strategy. At Harman I worked on technologies that anticipated the convergence of sensing, machine learning, and human-machine interfaces, including augmented audio systems that adapt sound based on a user’s surroundings and driver monitoring systems designed to understand cognitive state as vehicles move toward autonomy. My work has spanned aerospace systems at Sikorsky, automotive and audio platforms at Harman, wireless and video ecosystems at InterDigital, and communications infrastructure and future computing at Nokia. Today my work focuses on areas such as quantum computing, agentic AI ecosystems and protocols, and sensing infrastructure that enables intelligent systems to interact with the physical world. Alongside my corporate work I developed a research framework called ClusterFunk to analyze how technology shifts emerge. The framework examines signals across research publications, startups, and venture activity to identify where technical momentum and market formation are beginning to align. I have also worked as an EIR developing venture concepts and advised early-stage founders at Yale. Across my work I have: 3 Led $17M80M global R&D portfolios 3 Partnered with CTOs on multi-year technology direction 3 Influenced capital allocation across organizations of 300+ engineers 3 Supported $1B+ in acquisition diligence and integration Much of my work sits at the intersection of deep technology and product strategy, helping organizations identify which emerging technologies will become the next generation of platforms. donaldbutts
